In June, 1918, Eugene Debs gave a speech vilifying the United States' participation in World War I. Debs rightfully saw the so-called "Great War" as nothing but a boondoggle of industrialists and a meat grinder of working people. Under the Espionage Act, his speech was rewarded with a 10-year prison sentence, for the State correctly understood this speech to be a convincing argument for avoiding the draft and undermining the war effort. Here, Tim Robbin's reenacts the speech:
